DOULA is a word from ancient Greek, meaning“woman’s helper". Today, the term describes a woman who provides non-medical assistance during childbirth (a birth or labor doula),
or when baby goes home (a postpartum doula).
The doula's primary focus is on the new mom. She
"mothers the mother"
by attending to her physical, practical, & emotional needs.
A Doula Can :
~ make sure mom has eaten, is hydrated, gets rest
~ offer breastfeeding support and advice
~ offer newborn care guidance
~ care for baby while mom showers, naps, eats, etc.
~ prepare bottles, do baby’s laundry
~ make light meals, keep kitchen tidy
My job as a postpartum doula is to smooth the transition when new baby arrives where needed. I am also a certified lactation counselor,
so I can address breastfeeding issues.
